Mirror Gorillas are an upcoming band from the music talent hub of Manchester. These boys have got a bright future ahead of them. Trust me you will be hearing and seeing more of these boys in the next couple of years.
I was lucky enough to be asked to interview the band as part of the introducing side of the blog and also to help promote their upcoming ep. Sit tight this EP will blow your mind away.
Hello, please introduce yourselves.
Hey, we’re Mirror Gorillas from Manchester. We’re made up of Cardiff duo Harry and Butch on vocals and lead guitar, big-bouff bassist Tim and Aussie drummer Jamie.
If you have to place yourself under a specific genre what would it be?
We like to dabble in a bit of surfy vibes, a bit of britpop, and the occasional slow crooner but it all comes under the indie pop umbrella. We’re sort of like surf rock for people who have never been to the sea.
Debut EP is out April 15th, how are you feeling about the release?
We are super super excited to release the EP. We’ve put loads of work into it and it’s taken ages because we’re so busy, but it’s the best thing we’ve ever done and we can’t wait for people to hear it.
Who’s been the biggest influence on you and have they given you any advice or help?
In terms of this new EP we’ve been really influenced by a lot of 90s stuff like Blur, Pixies and Nirvana.
Obviously we have not had any advice from them, however the drunk lead singer of this really old band we played with one time grabbed Harry’s face after our set and told him that we could go all the way if we knuckled down. It was encouraging until he told us he used to have orgies in his van with fans.
We then found ourselves questioning his judgement. It was in that moment we saw our future and considered quitting the band, but we then remembered we don’t have a van so there was nothing to worry about.
Any plans of touring the EP after the release and if so who would be your dream support acts?
We haven’t had a chance to organise a tour yet with everything that’s been going on with the EP, but our next gig is in Gullivers in Manchester on the 20th April.
We’d love to tour with Trash and Plaza, we supported them on their joint tour recently and they are massive baes.
Will you be releasing the EP on physical copies?
We’ve been looking into a physical release but because we’re poor lowly students it’s really hard to find, although we really would love to
I am now moving onto the section where some of my mates and also fans of the band sent in questions to ask.
Firstly as you’re based in Manchester which was in the heart of Brit Pop who would you choose as your Brit Kings, Oasis or Blur?
We’re all at different points along the Blur-Oasis spectrum. Tim loves Blur and hates Oasis because they’re a bit tragic. Jamie loves Oasis because of their massive bangers but not Blur. Harry and Butcher think they are both sick but lean more towards Blur because it’s only the first two albums by Oasis they really rate.
Do you have any pets? If so any gorillas?
Between us we’ve got Harry’s greyhound Daisy, Butcher’s cats Thierry and Henry and our house gorillas Oliver Robert-Vale.
We recently had a bagel discussion in the group chat. What do you like to have on your bagels?
Gotta be cream cheese and smoked salmon.
If you could have written any song which song would have it been?
Harry- ‘Love Will Tear Us Apart’ by Joy Division
Butcher- ‘Happy Birthday To You for that royalty $$$’
Tim- ‘Reach For The Stars’ by S Club 7
Jamie-‘ 5, 6, 7, 8’ by Steps
Any guilty pleasure songs or bands?
No one should feel guilty about liking stuff but if we have to choose:
Harry- The One Night Only album ” Started A Fire” in its entirety
Butcher- ‘Angels’ by Robbie Williams
Tim- Cher Lloyd ‘ Want U Back’
Jamie- Counting Crows- Accidentally In Love by Counting Crows as featured in the Shrek 2 Soundtrack
Lastly, describe the EP in 3 words.
Alright, Alright, Alright
Remember their upcoming EP is out on April 15th and whenever they play near you tag along and have fun.
