Review: Oscar- Cut and Paste

After the popular release of EPs ‘146b’, ‘Daffodil Days’ and ‘Beautiful words’, not to mention incredible singles, Oscar has finally released his debut album ‘Cut and Paste’. Emerging on the music scene in 2014, the London synth-pop solo artist has maintained a beautifully iconic sound that is superbly presented in the album. The album was released on Friday 13th May with its colourful melodies, satisfying musical layers and Oscar’s gorgeous vocal tone.

The first track on the album is Oscar’s debut single ‘Sometimes’, showing where it all began with his introduction to the electro hip-hop music segment. I need not drag on about the track itself, as we all know how contagious it is with the striking synth melodies and catchy chorus. I adored having this song first, as it reflected the beginning and the development of Oscar’s music as the album goes on- plus it’s arguably his best work!

The album has a good mix of pre-released songs and new material, which tantalised my senses listening to the album in full. ‘Be Good’ enthuse Oscar’s addictive deep tone and his signature upbeat, head-bobbing melodies. ‘Feel It Too’ ticks all the boxes likewise, accumulating drum and guitar riffs with synth flavours to create Oscar’s trademark audio aesthetics.

‘Only Friend’ still obtains the striking melodies, whilst being a slower track on the album. This flaunts the diversity of the musical profile Oscar has, as he can still have a definitive sound during both slow and more dance tunes. The addition of Marika Hackman as a female vocalist to the song is very pleasing, as it provides a different dimension from Oscar’s deep heavy vocals with a more light and airy sound.

‘Fifteen’ is also a slower track on the album, of which I adore! It explores the idea of young relationships and feelings, with Oscar’s precise voice and the stripped back guitar accompaniment, it gives ‘Cut and Paste’ another angle.

IMG_1804[1]As well as many new songs, ‘Cut and Paste’ includes pre-released singles that bring that familiarity and nostalgia to the album. ‘Daffodil Days’, ‘Beautiful Words’, ‘Sometimes’ and my personal favourite ‘Breaking My Phone’ all feature scattered throughout the 10 track collection; not forgetting the album teaser track ‘Good Things’ which strangely is perfectly reflective of the album as a whole, whilst also not giving anything away about its level of genius.

The closing track ‘Gone Forever’ has a gorgeous synth intro and backing throughout the song. It also flaunts Oscar’s range as a vocalist, as the verse’s tune is higher pitched than his other songs; nevertheless, he delivers the airy melody sensationally. I also adore the syllabic synths over the bridge.

I didn’t think it was even possible, but Oscar exceeded my expectations with ‘Cut and Paste’. Every single track is so good and enthuse Oscar’s individual music sound that we all know and love. The balance between new and familiar tracks is perfect, the synth flavours and deliciously allocated and Oscar’s talent for writing and recording shines through like a beacon.
