NEW MUSIC FRIDAY // Slow Hollows ~ ‘Romantic’ album review xxx

Following on from their previous record, Atelophobia, LA based band Slow Hollows’ third full length record is a dreamy reflection upon the sorrow that comes hand in hand with love. Personal and melancholic, Romantic was written over a few months between 2015 and 2016.

The band were founded a year earlier (and originally known as Hollows) and are fronted by dreamboat Austin Feinstein, the 18 (!) year old who has gained the recognition of Tyler The Creator and worked with him on track ‘Perfect’.  Austin also played guitar on Frank Ocean’s critically acclaimed ‘Blonde‘ on track, ‘Self Control’.

The band refer to themselves as post pop, drawing on the dulcet tones and bittersweet symphonies of bands like Radiohead and Pavement.

“I was writing the album while I was still in high school” says Austin, “so there was a constant flux of emotion, physical state and surrounding, making it almost impossible to plan a single cohesive themed piece of music. As time passed I learned to accept the way that things had come to be, and appreciate that it was a sound unique to the band.”

The album opens boldly with ‘Spirit Week’ a track with a familiar feel to previous releases by the band but with a much more mature outlook, with the addition of horns. Austin’s vocals continue to be what draws the listener in and the ambient guitars drift you away to a beach in LA.

Personal favourite of mine ‘Hospital Flowers’ is a gritty track, with Austin repeating ‘Does it feel wrong to you? It doesn’t feel right to me at all…’ The track is accompanied by outstanding drumming and a wonderful bassline. Feinstein continues to prove that he is one of the most creatively unique men with a guitar of recent years and he is only just getting started, he only turned an adult last year!! The track’s solo is reminiscent of bands like ‘My Bloody Valentine’ and ‘DIIV’ providing a shoegaze aroma, opening even more doors for the bands future and really showcasing their talents.

The album takes a laid back turn of events with song ‘Luxury of Lull’, the guitar alone evokes a sense of sadness, the band are seen at their most honest as Austin mumbles the lyrics ‘I’ll drive myself into a hole’. This track really allows its listener to empathise with Feinstein.

‘Last Dance’ is destined to be a live anthem that will get the crowd really moving and having fun. It’s an energetic song, juxtaposed with its saddening lyricism. ‘Come and dance with me’ pleads Feinstein, and how can you say no?

I’m praying that Slow Hollows bring their tour to the UK next year. They are for me, the most exciting band around at the moment and what blows my mind the most is the fact that they are all SO young, they still have plenty more up their sleeves!
