Aussie 7 piece King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard have resurfaced after a few months off to share plans of their 9th studio album in 5 years. The band released the groundbreaking and ultimately one of the best records of the year, ‘Nonagon Infinity’ on 29th April 2016 and since then they have spent the majority of the year touring the never ending album playing festivals and gigs in Europe, Australia, North America and South America.
Now, the band have confirmed that their 9th studio album entitled (in true King Gizz style) ‘Flying Microtonal Banana’, will be released on February 24th, 2017 and I personaly can’t wait for it.
In a statement released by drummer Eric Moore, he said:
“Earlier this year we started experimenting with a custom microtonal guitar our friend Zak made for Stu,”
“The guitar was modified to play in 24-TET tuning and could only be played with other microtonal instruments. We ended up giving everyone a budget of $200 to buy instruments and turn them microtonal.
“The record features the modified electric guitars, basses, keyboards and harmonica as well as a turkish horn called a Zurna.”
This experimentation from the band is something we’ve seen before. On their 7th album, ‘Paper Mache Dream Ballon’, the band experimented just using acoustic and wind instruments and succeeded well with the band attracting attention for their innovative style.
Today, the band also released the first single from the album, called ‘Rattlesnake’ and a bat-shit crazy music video with it. The 7 minute 50 second long track is a combination of the heavy psych they play on ‘Im In Your Mind Fuzz’ and elements of the constant and raging drum beats from ‘Nonagon Infinity’ which keep the song flowing and moving at a steady speed for the entirety of the song. Its typical king Gizzard. A steady drum pattern superb riffs and crazy lyrics combining to create a unique, crazy, acid fuelled journey of madness
The music video proves this. Its old 3D ps2-like animations, used with the band flying through deserts and thunderstorms, whilst being chased by snakes and harassed by a tiny version of the bands 7th member holding a cowbell.
Yes that does happen…
At times in the video you’re greeted with a disturbing image of Stu Mckenzie with a deformed nightmarish face of the devil, travelling through time and space like an evil Doctor Who.
But wait, theres more…
Already known for their consistent and regular releases, the band have also confirmed that they have plans to release a further FOUR (yes you read that right) albums in 2017. No further details about the other four albums have been released yet, but what we know is that they will all be extraordinarily bonkers yet brilliant.
King gizzard have announced a hand full of UK dates for next June, with tickets going on sale on Monday 14th November at 9am.
