Need help beating those November blues? The “soothing surf-rock” vibes of oliver has a band might help

So summer’s over, the nights are getting longer and sweater weather has well and truly set in. If you need something to perk you up during these long winter months, take a listen to this soothing surf-rock number by London lo-fi project, Oliver Has a Band (stylized as ‘oliver has a band’).

Conceived earlier this year, their Facebook profile reveals little about them, however the dulcet tones of their debut single ‘every other lie’ says it all. The track fuses the off-kilter soft-rock jangle of Mac DeMarco with the smooth croons of Alex Turner, circa ‘Submarine’ and just a dash of Kings Of Leon. It’s a uniquely British swing on Californian surf-rock, did someone say The Beach Boys?

‘every other lie’ expands out of a sweet rolling drum beat into a tranquil hum of guitars, perfectly matched by the warm harmonies of the lead vocalist. You can certainly see the direction the boys want to take their sound, which harks back to the glory days of ‘60s surf music. They definitely nail the lo-fi vibes, and even incorporate a hint of doo-wop finesse into their music as well. I hope this band explore the countless possibilities open to them as they produce new music, and just maybe they’ll find their own sound that they feel secure and comfortable with.
