The blooming foursome, Spilt Milk Society, are an indie rock band from Shropshire. The band are on the rise, receiving continual support from BBC introducing and Piran also wrote about them as one of his choices for the hottest talent coming of of Brum (see here: https://letithappenmusicblog.com/2017/01/05/is-b-town-back-check-out-some-of-the-hottest-new-talent-coming-out-of-brum/). Strangely enough, last night, my granddad actually told me about how he had seen a band that he thought I might like. Turns out it was Spilt Milk Society.
I’ve been lucky enough to receive their new EP ‘I Like My Own Company’ ahead of it’s release on Friday (perks of being a music critic ah haha!) and it’s slightly different to their other stuff that i’ve listened to. There are two (three including Anhedonia’s reprise)
inability to feel pleasure in normally pleasurable activities.
Despite the track’s somewhat morbid name, the song it’s self is not morbid although the lyrics are emotionally deep. ‘Anhedonia’ is an electro indie song which feels like it could have taken inspiration from Two Door Cinema Club. The song is made up of dreamy synths and crunchy guitar rifts. I get quite laid back DIY vibes from this song.
‘The Mellow Yellow Lemon’ has a more up-beat and youthful tempo in comparison to ‘Anhedonia’. For fans of anything on Tame Impala’s iconic ‘Currents’ this track is for you. Their lead singer has a strong course voice which vaguely intimidates Yannis of Foals.
Lastly ‘Anhedonia’ (Reprise). The instrumental is very calming and adds a sense of finality to the EP. I’ve got to say at the moment, my preferred track of choice is ‘Anhedonia’, I think it’s lyrics show complexity and I like the feel of the song. Overall, I think the band take inspiration from their idols which ultimately allows them to create what they want in that style although with originality and twist.
‘I Like My Own Company’ is out on the 27th of January (Friday) and you’ll be able to find it on the band’s soundcloud : https://soundcloud.com/spilt-milk-society or on their spotify: https://open.spotify.com/artist/79B6yD43EMCq1i40pEiIMS
