Hampshire born, but Devon raised, multi-instrumentalist and indie-folk darling Marika Hackman has spent her fair share of time playing in the shadows of some of alternative music’s biggest and best artists, from Sundara Karma, to Toothless, the dreamy nu-folk solo project of Bombay Bicycle Club bassist, Ed Nash.

Whilst her 2015 debut, the melancholic and primal ‘We Slept At Last’ explored the genres darkest and most urgent recesses, the 25-year old Transgressive label star is back in 2017 with her forthcoming sophomore album, ‘I’m Not Your Man’. ‘My Lover Cindy’ is the latest single release from the album, following lean and mean guitar-pop masterpiece ‘Boyfriend’, released earlier this year.
Teaming up with fellow London girl-gang The Big Moon, who feature as Marika’s backing band for the record, ‘My Lover Cindy’ is yet another coolly crafted indie-pop masterpiece, consolidating her bold but brilliant stylistic change. Featuring delicate guitar lines matched against fuzzy reverb and Celia Archer’s groove-able bass twang, the song boasts another crowdpleaser of a chorus destined for sun (and cider) soaked festival fields this summer.
“I wanted to let rip and lose control. That’s the kind of music I’ve always wanted to make. When I was younger I wasn’t looking at Joni Mitchell. I was looking at Nirvana thinking, ‘I wanna be like that!’”
– Marika Hackman
Hackman’s lyrical abilities are still razor sharp, as is her quick-fire wit, dealt by the bucket-load as she details the sometimes terrifying throwaway nature of love, and relationships around questioning themes of femininity and sexual identity, living in the social-media bubble. It would be an understatement to say we’re MEGA excited to hear what else this album has to offer.
After a hugely well received run of shows at SXSW in Austin, Texas, Marika is heading out on a very (very) short string of UK tour dates this May ahead of ‘I’m Not Your Man’s release on June 2nd through AMF records. You can buy tickets through her website from the link here. As ever I’ve added all the relevant dates and a Spotify embed of ‘My Lover Cindy’ below:
