Her’s: Gwdihw, Cardiff gig review

Amid exams and assignment deadlines, students and many fans alike congregated at Gwdihŵ in Cardiff on Thursday night to listen to the offering of Her’s.

Hailing from quiet coastal towns, one being in the north west of England and the other being in Norway, the Liverpool-based duo Stephen Fitzpatrick and Audun Laading returned to Cardiff after their show in Porter’s late last year.

Her’s was spectacular. Audun, the bassist, full of energy and panache was as much as a star as the singer, Stephen, dancing almost-non-stop during the set. It was truly joy-inducing to be in their presence.

The crowd radiated exuberance as Her’s played out popular numbers that included Marcel, Cool with You and Speed Racer. In addition to playing songs from debut LP Songs of Her’s, the band treated the audience to a few new songs, which can be expected to appear on their forthcoming LP.

Having small personnel was no limit for the pair – intricately using drum and loop machines while playing their own instruments. The two were full of camaraderie, making efforts to interact with the crowd and not failing to make a few quips along the way. One quip worth mentioning was when there was a slight hiccup with the drum kit to which Audun responded by giving Stephen a drumstick. Except, not a literal drumstick; but the sweet instead, which Audun had been hiding in his hat, almost anticipating the need for it.

The band swooned the crowd as they gave a rendition of Robbie William’s classic She’s the One. Overall, Her’s did a dazzling performance and certainly distracted from the stress of university deadlines and assignments.

Her’s continue their tour this week stopping at the following places:

Hare & Hounds, Birmingham – Wednesday, May 2

The Bodega, Nottingham – Thursday, May 3

In addition to their headline tour, Her’s will appearing at festivals Live at Leeds, Handmade Festival, Sounds From The Other City, The Great Escape, Citadel and Tramlines.
